Causes of Surgical Errors

For those with complicated medical conditions, sometimes the only way to get better is by undergoing surgery. It is not an easy decision to make, but if your physician says it is necessary, then one can only hope and pray that all goes well during surgery.

Unfortunately, oftentimes all is not well during and after the surgery because of surgical errors. These errors can be made by the surgeon them self, by the professional staff assisting in the surgery, or some combination of both.

Regardless of who makes the error, the end outcome could result in serious complications requiring more surgery or the patient could even die. Injuries from such mistakes can be very serious, and some of the patients who are affected may require lifelong care or treatment because of those errors.

Causes of Surgical Errors

Surgical errors are caused by many different reasons, many of which stem from malpractice. Some of the most common errors include the following:

  • Human error – This is one of the most common causes of surgical mistakes. Surgeons may make errors when making incisions, or they mistakenly use improper techniques. At the same time, nurses and anesthesiologists who are supposed to monitor the surgeon during surgery may forget to check the patient’s vitals or administer too much medication.
  • Insufficient planning – Sometimes, surgeons and those assisting them in the operating room may not adequately prepare for the medical procedure at hand which may lead to preventable mistakes. With the proper planning and sufficient preparation, the surgeon and the professionals involved in the procedure should have all the proper instruments available for use, ensure that all equipment is available and in good working order, and that every step in the procedure has been thoroughly discussed and is understood by all who are involved.
  • Incompetence – One would expect that surgeons and all professionals involved in the surgery are well trained, and often times they are, however, practicing in medicine requires continuous training and learning new skills in the ever-evolving medical care field, especially with the use of new technologies. Surgeons who are not up to date with new technology or who are less experienced, are more likely to make mistakes during a medical procedure.
